This course is designed for young persons aged 13 to 16 years who wish to develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to safely operate an agricultural tractor within a controlled off-road training environment under appropriate supervision. Learners will develop an understanding of tractor components, operator controls, pre-use inspections, safe operating techniques, manoeuvring, simple maintenance, attachment awareness and safe shutdown procedures. The course combines theoretical knowledge with closely supervised practical activities to develop confidence, hazard awareness and safe working practices appropriate to the learner's age, physical capability and level of experience. Training focuses on the safe preparation and operation of agricultural tractors in realistic land-based settings whilst recognising the additional responsibilities associated with training young persons. Emphasis is placed upon recognising hazards, understanding machine limitations, maintaining safe operating distances, communicating effectively and adopting responsible attitudes towards personal safety and the safety of others. The course supports progression into further agricultural and land-based education and training and provides a foundation for future supervised tractor operation within agricultural, horticultural and countryside management environments. Successful completion of this course does not provide legal entitlement to operate tractors on the public highway or undertake unsupervised workplace activities. Delivery should reflect current legislation and industry good practice Relevant legislation includes, but is not limited to:- 1. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 2. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998 3. Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 4. Health and Safety (Young Persons) Regulations 1997 5. Relevant HSE guidance relating to children and young persons in agriculture, and manufacturer operating instructions. National Occupational Standards (NOS) may include, but are not limited to: 1. Preparing agricultural machinery for operation. 2. Operating agricultural tractors safely and efficiently. 3. Carrying out routine operator maintenance and inspections. 4. Maintaining safe working practices within land-based industries. 5. Working safely to protect people, property and the environment.
